ABOUT PHIL |
I grew up in Western New York State, showing early artistic talent, and eventually pursued a major in Photography at Rochester Institute of Technology. Ultimately, I developed a passion for working with wood as well. I spent a good deal of my career in woodworking, building and refinishing custom furniture. I have always loved drawing out the beauty of the wood’s natural color and grain, and choosing just the right materials and techniques to enhance them.
Eventually, photography found its way back into my life, and I spend much of my spare time traveling around to find just the right spot for that shot of a bridge or a train or just about anything that catches my attention. While taking photos on the trails of the Smoky Mountains, I started picking up fallen tree branches. Each one suggested its own design for a special hiking stick or cane, and I began carving those visions into reality. Some of my walking stick creations give you a hint about my personality; if I can make you smile, I'm a happy man! I call both Western New York and Western North Carolina "home." Most days, if you don't find me in my woodworking shop, you can find me exploring (camera in hand, of course) with my partner, fellow artist and photographer, Galia Silverberg...and our Australian Shepherd, Chloe! |
